RainierCherriesWIP

For more than a month now, I've had this cherry and glass painting drawn off and was in the mood to start it. As I started painting the gamboge into the glass there on the right, I realized that I was painting off the wrong reference photograph! And to make things worse, when I left that area, and decided to paint the cherries to get some color in, I forgot to lay a wash of gamboge down on my cherries. Red glows when you put yellow under it...so...I've changed the cherries from Bing's(the really dark reds/burgundy) to Rainiers...and since I don't have the right ref in drawing or color...this one may be a flop. But...somebody told me "it's only paper" so we'll see. Since we're out of cherry season here in Texas at the grocery store, looks like Google will be my new friend as fellow artist Rose Gesford took pity on me and found a site with wonderful colorful photos of the rainiers.

  1. Not a flop at all! It's gorgeous! I was at an art exhibition recently and a painting of a bowl of cherries won an honorable mention. These cherries you've painted are much prettier than those, too! And the composition is so fresh and compelling. Definitely a great painting in the making!

  2. Thank you, Katherine...I love to paint reds, but usually paint from a photo...this one is going to be somewhat of a challenge when I get inside the glass with no true reference. I do appreciate your comment.

  3. Mollie, I totally agree with Katherine. The cherries are beautiful. Painting without a reference certainly will be a challenge, but I am sure that you are up to it.

  4. Thanks, Christiane. Hey...I stopped by your blog and tried to comment on your architectural/water painting, but Blogger wouldn't take it...tried 3 times. I think it just doesn't like me.

  6. Would never know the roadblocks you have come across on this one, all I see is how pretty it looks so far! Such bright and clear color in your cherries as well as the glass, look forward to seeing you complete it.
