Berry Bowl

Here's another painting I'm working on to decide on the colors I want to use in a larger and more diverse painting for our Splash August trip to Florida.  I'm trying out many combinations for the blackberries and haven't settled in  on a particular color yet.  Blackberries...in real life...are black.  But, black in watercolor is a dead color so I'm trying out other combinations...have decided that if I don't come up with something I really love, they'll probably make them raspberries...that'd work too.  But, I absoluely love blackberries and I'm determined to make them work.

  1. I love those colors! And the contrast of the dark berries and the transparent glass is wonderful!

  3. Wow, this is so lovely. I think you've nailed the colors Mollie. :) Really beautiful. Have you tried moonglow by Daniel Smith? That might be interesting here.

  4. Thanks, Katherine...you should see this gorgeous bowl IRL...it's one of the really fine old cut crystal pieces...love all those angles.

Hey Christiane...glad to see you back. And I wish you could come to Splash too...we'll have a wonderful week of painting. I'm also doing a demo of silver and will post that soon.

Thanks Crystal...I don't have that color, but a friend, Kay Smith, uses it all the time...didn't think of it. I'll sure give it a try as I'm making up an order right now. I'm also going to try a few others as black is such a challenge to keep alive...and we all know that blackberries are black...and so yummy. Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Gee, Mollie, the color of the blackberries seems dead on to me. Your crystal inspires me - my mom had a lot of Fostoriaware and some other glass pieces - I'll have to see about putting some into a still life.

  6. Thanks, Deb...I'd love to see you do some glass...it would be gorgeous with your skills. That painting with all that fabric design you just posted is glorious and looks so difficult so crystal would be a breeze for sure.

  7. Love how you can make the crystal look so real. In fact I thought it was a photograph of the actual in the thumbnail.
