Sunshine Girl

This is another portrait of my granddaughter Isabella and my object with this one was to see how far I could push reds. My refererence photo is of her sitting in one of my yellow rocking chairs on the back patio...and she is literally "sitting in the sun". If I'm honest, I must admit that I used too much aliz crimson on her right cheek and couldn't scrub it out so I had to go deeper and deeper with the reds. But, she was in bright direct light...that's my excuse. This will probably be my last attempt at portraits for a while though as I seem to be getting a heavier and heavier hand...so...back to crystal and glass for a while. Although I am not happy with this one, I do believe that everything we paint is a learning lesson and when we start something...we should finish it.

  2. Yes, it is a bit reddish, but it is spectacularly beautiful anyway

  3. Thank you Victoria and Vicki...yes...red can get out of hand when the brush is in my hand for sure. I did realize one thing however...had I used a transparent red rather than a somewhat staining aliz crimson, it could have been lifted and an entirely more delicate hue used...maybe...ha!

  4. What a beauty your granddaughter is...she has the eyes of Vivian Leigh in Gone with the Wind! This is a wonderful portrait...I don't find that the red has been pushed too much.

  6. I see what you're saying about the reds, but it's not distracting. I like the brightness of the painting....it matches your granddaughter's bright smile:)

  7. Mollie I think you are too hard on yourself, the painting is really beautiful, and your granddaughter has the sweetest smile. The "too much red" which I don't think is too much at all , gives the painting a warm sunny glow.

  12. Thanks everybody for your kind comments. I've been gone for the past two days and what a fun thing to come here and see that you've all stopped by. (I went to the boats(that's casino around here) and shouldn't have gone...lost all my play money really fast. I need to just stay home and paint as it'll keep me out of trouble.
