DonkeyWIP

Why in the world I chose to paint a donkey as my first painting of the new year is really beyond me! Yesterday when we met for art retreat, I didn't have anything at all in mind and found a black/white photo of this little guy in our "stack of stuff". The only area I think I'm finished with is the eye and fur in that general area...need to knock down that masked fur to the left of his eye. I started with the blue on the right ear and intended to paint a rather funky portrait using blues, reds, golds, purples (ala Kay Smith color selections), but my realism got in the way. When my leaf raking chores are finished this afternoon (we have glorious sunshine here again in Texas), I'll try to get back here and finish. This was a 2 hour challenge thingie (where you stop and evaluate after 2 hours of straight painting...photograph it...post it...then get back to it and finish, promising to take another finished photo and posting that). This is one of the fun things we do our our PaintersFriendsForum and it's always a fun challenge. This is a half sheet in size...hence my being able to paint it so quickly (when I paint on the large size, I don't get so bogged down with details...unless, of course...it's crystal.

  4. What a nice and original way to start the new year! I especially admire the way that you have painted the fur and the colorful shadows around the ears. He is so cute! I agree with Pat: this little guy is stunning and really does not need anything else.

  5. Well, you don't see too many paintings of donkeys and I think he (?) is very handsome and coming along well.

  6. Thanks, Rhonda...I've always enjoyed painting "quirky" stuff and don't have a clue where this one came from for sure. This is what happens when I don't have a plan...ha.

  7. Mollie, I love him....especially his soft looking muzzle that you've painted so delicately with hints of blue (at least that what I see).
    Very nicely done!

  8. Well , it certainly is not a common subject among watercolorists, but he is just gorgeous, you gave him such a sweet and friendly expression, - you can't but help loving him.

  10. Those animals are very hardworking Mollie even some people do refer to their stubbornness :)

I love this painting's 3D look. By letting the edges vanish you achieved it very well!

    thank you,
    Irina

  11. Thanks Irina...I hadn't thought of it that way, but after looking through differents...I believe you're right...isn't it wonderful that we all see something different in our art.
