Artichokes WIP

This colorful painting of artichokes has been lots of fun. While taking a workshop with Karlyn Holman 3 years ago, she shared some of her photographs from her European teaching jaunts, and this reference was one of four of artichokes that I just loved. This particular one was at a street market in Paris. The pastel colors are actually there in the chokes...and...it's a feast for the eyes while painting. There are lots of edges that will be cleaned up, and several more darker combinations of colors going across the page. This one is quarter sheet, and I'm using so many different colors I won't name them all...just a whole bunch of greens, blues, magentas and pinky yellow hues. I just wonder if they taste like the plain ole green ones we get here in the states?

My painting of Neiman is finished I think, but I'm going to live with it a bit longer before signing...might need just another tweak or two.

  1. Mollie, this is looking very good already! What a great subject and super colors. This looks like quite a complex painting, but those never give you any problems. I am even certain that you will find a way to put a little touch of bright red in there somewhere:-)

  2. Hi Christiane...I just posted this so you must be "wasting time" on this silly computer...ha. This one is pretty complex alright...lots of color shifts in the chokes, but it's really fun to paint with abandon, especially when it's "fluff". You're right...there'll probably be a hit of red in there on the other side somewhere.

  3. Mollie, admiring your WIPs cannot be considered "wasting time":-)...but yes, I spend too much time on the computer when I should be painting:-)

  5. Thanks, Pat. One of the remaining chokes actually has shades of that lavender that you have in your hibiscus...along with a bunch of magenta.
